What's new for the VW Atlas in 2023?

The VW Atlas was so well-designed and so well-received last year, it receives only modest changes for 2023. There's a new five-trim lineup that starts with the base level Atlas SE. Volkswagen has changed things up so that the 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro gauge cluster now comes standard across all trims except the base.

Engines and performance

The new VW Atlas gives you your choice of two engines. One is a four-cylinder engine that delivers 235 horsepower and the other is a V6 that's good for 276 horsepower. Both are teamed up with an 8-speed automatic transmission and your choice of either front- or all-wheel drive. The V6 engine is responsive and refined, accelerating smoothly without ruffling any feathers in the cabin.

The new Atlas responds well to steering maneuvers and is well-composed on highways around Stratford and Stamford, CT while being agile in the city. The ride is smooth and the suspension can absorb just about anything but extreme potholes. Depending on your engine choice, the new VW Atlas can make the run from zero to 60 mph in 7.6 seconds or 8.8 seconds.

Towing and payload

The six-cylinder 276-horsepower versions of the new VW Atlas have a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds thanks to the fact that Volkswagen put a factory-installed trailer hitch on every Atlas model. That's enough towing capacity to pull a boat. The payload capacity ranges from 1,334 pounds to 1,425 pounds.

Fuel economy

The four-cylinder model with front-wheel drive can stretch a gallon of gas the farthest giving you 21 MPG in the city and 25 MPG on Watertown CT highways. The V6 has an EPA rating of 18 MPG on city streets and 24 MPG on the highway.

Interior comfort and cargo

The new Volkswagen Atlas has an interior space that's friendly to the family with a generous amount of cupholders. The third row of seats can comfortably seat full-size adults and that's something you don't always see in a three-row SUV. The Atlas has room in the back for four carry-on suitcases behind the third row and an incredible 38 suitcases behind the first row. That's made possible by the fact that you get a massive 96.8 cubic feet with all rear seats folded.

Infotainment technology

The VW Atlas starts with a 6.5-inch standard touch screen and you can upgrade to an 8-inch version. Wired smartphone connectivity is also standard and so is a six-speaker stereo. Other optional upgrades include satellite radio, a 12-speaker stereo and wireless device charging. You also have the option of adding available remote start and a panoramic sunroof.
